Tasks & Activities

TASKS

Directorate General of Foundations has undertaken lots of tasks. Among them the most important success areas of the institution can be counted as;

  1. sustaining the off state service organizations from Ottoman period to todays for public interest,
  2. constituting an information archive system belonging to the historical buildings for the protection and restoration of those buildings,
  3. sharing these information and documents with Turkish and world communities,
  4. translation of the documents like deeds of trust, deeds, certificates, which exist in various archives in untidy and neglected conditions, nto contemporary Turkish and computerizing them,
  5. fulfilling the deeds of trusts, updating the deeds of trusts which are not possible to fulfill today,
  6. promoting the foundation concept by generalizing it and to achieve  this aim by founding new universities, museums and hospitals,
  7. conservation of immovable cultural properties by using the contemporary technologic means,
  8. retrieving the foundation cultural properties which have been smuggled abroad by carefully tracking them, operating the foundation properties in an economic way.


ACTIVITIES
 

  1. Directorate General of Foundations have been carrying out the works for the identification, making the inventory and registry of movable and immovable cultural properties in and out of the country with an institutional responsibility.
  2. Survey, restitution and restoration projects of foundation cultural properties are prepared and restored by Directorate General of foundations.
  3. The cultural properties on the Historical Silk Road have been taken into restoration in order to give functions and put them into use according to the contemporary conditions of the properties.
  4. Most of the costs for restorations and repairs are covered from the budget of the institution, some of them are also covered by the sponsors.
  5. Works of Art Information Management System (WAIMS) Project is designed to provide a regular archive system.
  6. More than 10 million written documents (warrants, deeds, certificate, etc) have been examined and saved to the archives within the scope of Foundation Archive Management System (FAMS) project. It is presumed that these studies will reach up to 12 Million documents.
  7. Movable cultural properties are protected by exhibiting in the museums after their maintenance and conservations are made in the laboratories. In addition to the 4 existing museums in Istanbul, "Foundation Museums" were opened in Ankara, Konya, Edirne, Tokat, Kastamonu, İstanbul and Gaziantep provinces between 2006 and 2010. Decisions have been taken to open one museum in each one of Sivas, Kayseri, Niğde, Kütahya, Samsun, Diyarbakir, Malatya, Erzurum, İzmir, Antalya and Bitlis provinces and 2 museums in Istanbul and the works are still being carried out for this issue.
  8. Besides, the movable foundation cultural properties such as; carpets, rugs, handmade tiles, tablets which have been stolen from mosques and foundation properties are taken back by searching the auctions abroad by the Struggle Against Smuggling Office of the Directorate General of Foundations in cooperation with the other institutions like Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Interpol, Gendarmerie General Command. These regained works of arts are later exhibited in the museums.
  9. In addition, historical carpets and rugs in the mosques in all provinces of Turkey were collected and classified by the experts of the institution and historically well qualified ones were cleaned and conserved carefully to be exhibited in Foundation Museums.
  10. Every year in the first week of May, "Foundation Week" activities are carried out.


Symposiums have been held in accordance with the context of the theme of the celebrated week every year in order to spread the foundation consciousness to every layer of the public and workshops have been arranged in order to study on the problems of the foundation cultural properties and the solutions for them.

Directorate General of Foundations celebrated the year 2006 as "The Year of Foundation Civilizations", the year 2007 as "The Year of Environment for Foundation Civilizations", the year 2008 as "The Year of Water for Foundation Civilizations", the year 2009 as "The Year of Health for Foundation Civilizations", and the year 2010 as "The Year of Istanbul for Foundation Civilizations". The preparations for celebrating 2011 as "The Year of Education for Foundation Civilizations" have already begun.

By planning the 2006 around "foundation civilization" theme, Directorate General of Foundations held symposiums in order to spread the foundation consciousness to every layer of the public, and in addition working groups have been established under the following topics;

• New Methods and Techniques in the Restoration of Relics and the Problems Faced,

•Necessary Works for Preventing the Foundation Relics to be Smuggled Abroad and Stolen.

•By announcing 2007 as "Foundation Civilization Environment Year", in that year Directorate General of Foundations;

2 separate symposiums under the topics "Environment in Traditional Foundation Culture and Environment Foundations" and "Roles of the Foundations in Solving the Environment Problems" and working group meetings under the topics "Environment Problems and Studies of Foundations Related to This Field", "Foundation Relics and Environmental Planning" and "Introduction of Our Foundation Civilization to EU Member States and to Our Citizens" were held.

In 2008 "Foundation Civilization Water Year", the place and the strategic importance of water in our lives are pointed out and water civilization works appeared with the foundation understanding was stressed and the importance of protecting these works and passing them to the next generations and is stated and putting the new examples is targeted.

In addition to the symposium where Water in Traditional Foundation Culture and Water Foundations and Global Warming subjects were discussed, the working group meetings on the topics; Social and Cultural Functions Which the Foundations May Undertake in Solving the Current Water Problems, Protection of Water Bodies, Increasing Their Touristic Values and Introducing Them, Water Foundations in our History and Modernization of Water Services, Passing Them to Our Day were held.

In addition to pointing out the health problems faced both in Turkey and in the world and the importance of being healthy, 2009 was announced as "Foundation Civilization Health Year" with the contemporary point of view by stressing the importance given in the health services through foundation civilization.

Together with the symposium where Health in Foundation Civilization and Human and Health Fact in Foundation Culture subjects discussed, the working group meetings on the subjects; Health Institutions in foundation Culture, Contributions of the Foundations to the Contemporary Health Services, Functions, and Architectural Characters of Darüşşifa (Old Hospitals) were held.

Moreover, "I am Visiting Foundation Arts" march is arranged every year for the students of High School 1st Grade in order to create awareness and sympathy for cultural heritage among the young generations.

By targeting the protection of the cultural heritage and passing them to the next generations;

• Painting and Composition Writing competitions for High School and University Students,

• Article competitions for Post Graduate and Ph Degree Students, and

• Competitions for Marbling art, Photography, Calligraphy, Illustration, and for Projects regarding the foundations are arranged throughout the country.
